• First, it is essential to choose a name, which should be neither too short nor too long (generally the commands that you give to the dog are single syllable, then the name should have a maximum of three syllables). It is also important to remember that the dog can recognize the sound and not the words, so you need to choose a name that doesn't resemble one of the commands that you are going to teach to your puppy (Zelda hears no difference between "Zelda" and "Elda"). On the Internet there are many pages that offer suggestions for the choice of the name.

• A comfortable bed, whether you choose to let the dog live inside or outside. With regard to indoor kennels, the choice will be very difficult, as there are of every kind: pillows, cots, wicker baskets,... The important thing is that it is comfortable and positioned in a "tactical" place. It is generally recommended to put it in a quiet place and not busy, but I have noticed that since very very young, Zelda preferred to sleep on the floor in front of the door just to monitor the house than on her warm pillow. At that point you might as well move the kennel in the living room... As regards the doghouses for the outside, it is important that they are solid and robust. You have to choose the right size, so as not to disperse heat and to allow the dog to move smoothly. It would also be appropriate to choose a removable dog-house to allow us to wash them every now and then! On the web, I saw that there are even dogshouses that are heated with the power adapter and I think this could be a great idea to protect our friend from the cold winter coming!

• With the arrival of winter, it might be a good idea to buy a cover or a sleeping bag to keep him warm on the nights of frost.

• Collar/harness and leash will be necessary to bring your new friend outside, although at least until vaccines completed, you need to be VERY careful where you let him smell! It is important to choose the collar or harness of correct size, to avoid that the dog is able to "escape" or that he can be strangled. As for the leash, the extending ones are not recommended until the puppy has learned to walk beside you and not five meters ahead.

• The medallion with the name and the phone number is ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY, it must always be attached to the collar or harness of your puppy because it is faster to find you through that than through reading the microchip. In the market there are of all kinds: from dices within which you write manually the phone number (prices generally do not exceed € 3) to the engraved ones in metal, depicting your favorite breed, or bones, hearts , etc. (prices range from € 5 for the simplest to € 16 for those with race on).

• A dispenser of hygienic bags to collect souvenirs of your friend, because no matter how unpleasant, in Italy if you are seen leaving droppings around, fines can be as high as € 250! Furthermore in recent years, these dispenser have been created in every shape and color, and they seem real fashion accessoriess!

• Two bowls will be needed from the very first day to allow your new friend to eat and drink. Here, too, it is important to choose well, because both models that the materials are many (and luckily!). First of all, they must be of the right size and anti tipping. The puppy should be able to take what's inside effortlessly! There are bowls made ​​of metal and plastic, design easier or more appealing. It's important to remember, however, that the plastic deteriorates with time, while the metal, in addition to being more durable, maintains the water more fresh. In the market there are also some very funny fountains that ensure that the water remains clean and fresh (and sooner or later I will buy one for Zelda). Let us remember in this context that we must always make sure that the water bowl is full and the water inside is not dirty or frozen! There are also particularly high bowls that allow dogs with long ears (such as Cocker) to drink or eat without them falling on his face all the time.

• In case you are expecting a little Frenchie, I recommend you to buy a mat to put under the bowls to "limit the damage" during the long process of watering (Zelda creates a real lake every time!).

• The choice of food, at least initially, will not be yours, because every time you go to get a puppy, the breeder provides a small package of food to which the dog is used to. If you want to change the type of food, remember that the change should be done gradually in 5-7 days! It 's always good anyway talk first with your veterinarian.

• Sanitary pads or newspapers will be used to accustom the puppy to soil where you want him to, though, from personal experience, the puppy does not distinguish a sanitary pad to a very expensive Persian carpet... So either remove all the carpets in the house, or immediately let him use the paper (although the paper does not absorb the pee but does it glide smoothly even on your floor!). There are available spray products to be used as attractants or repellents precisely suited for this purpose.

• Spray environments, because up to three months you can not wash your new friend, who surely will not come scented! If the smell is really unbearable, you can use a cloth dampened with water and white vinegar on the coat of the puppy, but only under consent vet!

• Some toys are useful, although the favorite sport of all puppies is sleeping! In the market there are all kinds: plastic, latex, rubber, fabric, beads, knots, buffalo bones,... The important thing is that the colors are different and maybe that they emit some funny sound. I think it's also important to get a KONG, ie a kind of hollow cone in which you can hide treats all kinds of biscuits, canned meat, pâté, etc... The game is to lick this delicacy Kong until the inside is worn out and in the meantime the mommy has gone to work or shopping and the puppy hasn't noticed anything! When the dog will become adept at this game, you can prepare a Kong and put it in the freezer so it will be more difficult to lick the content!

• In the event that your puppy arrives in the winter, it would be good to get a coat for the cold and a poncho for the rain, especially with dogs particularly affected by temperatures as Chihuahuas. If the puppy will come in summer, however, a nice cooling pad should be taken into serious consideration, especially if you have chosen a brachycephalic breed (Bulldogs, Pug, Boxer, ...).

• Moreover, it is almost a necessity to bring the dog in the car and therefore is well equip. You can purchase the appropriate seat belts that attach exactly like ours (I recommend to use ONLY with the harness!) Or the confortable car seats in soft fabrics and colors. 

• At a later stage, when the puppy will be a bit bigger, you may want to arrange nibbles for training and products for the care of the hair (shampoo, conditioner, brush, ...).

Come per l'arrivo di un bambino, è necessario prepararsi anche per l'arrivo di un cucciolo, sapere cosa acquistare e soprattutto come comportarsi con la nuova piccola palla di pelo.

• Anzitutto, è indispensabile scegliere un nome, che non deve essere né troppo corto né troppo lungo (generalmente i comandi che si danno al cane sono mono o bisillabi, quindi il nome dovrebbe avere al massimo 3 sillabe). E' importante poi ricordarsi che il cane riconosce il suono e non le parole, quindi è necessario scegliere un nome che non somigli ad uno dei comandi che abbiamo intenzione di insegnare al nostro cucciolo (ad esempio per Zelda non c'è alcuna differenza tra "Zelda" ed "Elda"). In internet ci sono numerose pagine che offrono spunti per la scelta del nome (ad esempio questo). 

• Una cuccia confortevole, sia che si scelga di far vivere il cane all'interno che all'esterno. Per quanto riguarda le cucce da interni, la scelta sarà veramente ardua, poiché ne esistono di ogni tipo: cuscini, brandine, ceste in vimini,... L'importante è che sia comoda e posizionata in un punto "tattico". Generalmente si consiglia di metterla in un luogo "isolato" e non di passaggio in modo da lasciare tranquillo il cucciolo, ma io ho notato che già da cucciolissima, Zelda preferiva dormire per terra davanti alla porta pur di sorvegliare le entrate della casa che al caldo sul suo cuscinone. A quel punto tanto vale spostare la cuccia in salotto... Per quanto riguarda le cucce da esterno invece, è importante che siano solide e robuste e soprattutto delle giuste dimensioni, in modo da non disperdere calore e da consentire al cane di muoversi agevolmente. Sarebbe anche opportuno che fossero smontabili per consentirci di lavarle ogni tanto! Su questo sito, ho visto che esistono addirittura delle cucce che si riscaldano con l'alimentatore di corrente e mi sono subito sembrate ottime per proteggere il nostro amico dal freddo inverno in arrivo!

• Con l'arrivo dell'inverno, potrebbe essere una buona idea comprare una copertina oppure un sacco nanna per tenerlo al caldo nelle notti di gelo.

• Collare/Pettorina e guinzaglio saranno indispensabili per portare a passeggio il vostro nuovo amico, anche se almeno fino a vaccini completati, dovrete stare MOLTO attenti a dove lo farete annusare! E' importante scegliere il collare o la pettorina delle giuste dimensioni, per evitare che il cane riesca ad "evadere" oppure che possiate strozzarlo. Per quanto riguarda il guinzaglio, è da sconsigliare quello allungabile almeno finché il cucciolo non avrà imparato a camminare accanto a voi e non cinque metri avanti. 

• La medaglietta col nome ed il numero di telefono è ASSOLUTAMENTE INDISPENSABILE, deve sempre essere attaccata al collare o alla pettorina del vostro cucciolo poiché è più veloce ritrovare voi attraverso quella che leggendo il microchip. In commercio ne esistono di ogni tipo: dai bussolotti al cui interno si scrive manualmente il numero di telefono (i prezzi generalmente non superano i 3€) alle vere e proprie medagliette in metallo che vengono incise, raffiguranti la vostra razza preferita oppure ossi, cuori, ecc... (i prezzi vanno dai 5€ per le più semplici ai 16€ per quelle con la razza).

• Un dispenser di sacchettini igienici per raccogliere i ricordini del vostro amico, perché per quanto sia poco piacevole, se venite beccati ad abbandonare deiezioni in giro le multe possono arrivare anche a 250€! Inoltre negli ultimi anni ne sono stati creati di ogni forma e colore, e sembrano dei veri e propri accessori fashion (il più famoso è il BON TON)!

• Due ciotole saranno indispensabili sin dal primo giorno per permettere al vostro nuovo amico di mangiare e soprattutto bere. Anche qui è importante scegliere bene, poiché sia i modelli che i materiali sono molti (e per fortuna!). Anzitutto deve essere della giusta dimensione e anti ribaltamento. Il cucciolo deve riuscire a prendere quello che c'è dentro senza fare fatica! Esistono ciotole in metallo e in plastica, dal design più semplice o più accattivante. E' bene ricordare però che la plastica con il tempo si deteriora, mentre il metallo, oltre ad essere più resistente, mantiene più fresca l'acqua. In commercio ci sono anche delle simpaticissime fontanelle che garantiscono che l'acqua resti sempre fresca e pulita (e prima o poi ne acquisterò una anche per Zelda). Ricordiamoci a questo proposito che bisogna sempre assicurarsi che la ciotola dell'acqua sia piena e che l'acqua al suo interno non sia sporca o congelata! Esistono anche delle ciotole particolarmente alte che permettono ai cani con le orecchie lunghe (come i Cocker) di bere o mangiare senza che queste cadano sul muso continuamente.

• Nel caso in cui siate in attesa di un piccolo Bullo, vi consiglio vivamente di acquistare anche un tappetino da mettere sotto alle ciotole per "limitare i danni" durante il lungo processo di abbeveramento (Zelda fa un vero e proprio lago ogni volta!).

• La scelta del cibo, almeno inizialmente, non sarà vostra, poiché ogni qual volta si va a prendere un cucciolo, l'allevatore fornisce una piccola confezione di crocchine a cui il cane è abituato. Nel caso in cui poi vogliate cambiare tipo di alimentazione, ricordo che il cambio va fatto gradualmente in 5-7 giorni! E' sempre bene comunque parlarne prima col veterinario.

• Tappetini igienici o giornali serviranno per abituare il cucciolo a sporcare dove vorrete voi, anche se, per esperienza personale, il cucciolo non distingue un tappetino igienico da un tappeto persiano molto costoso... Quindi o togliete tutti i tappeti della casa, o abituatelo subito al giornale (anche se il giornale non assorbe la pipì ma la fa scivolare dolcemente fin sul vostro parquet!). In commercio esistono dei prodotti spray attrattivi o repellenti proprio adatti a questo scopo.

• Spray per ambienti, perché fino ai 3 mesi non potrete lavare il vostro nuovo amico, che di sicuro non vi arriverà profumato! Se proprio l'odore sarà insopportabile, potrete passare un panno inumidito con acqua e aceto di vino bianco sul manto del cucciolo, ma solo sotto consenso veterinario!

• Dei giochini saranno sicuramente utili, anche se lo sport preferito da tutti i cuccioli è dormire! In commercio ce ne sono di ogni tipo: plastica, lattice, gomma, tessuto, palline, nodini, ossi di bufalo,... L'importante è che i colori siano vari e magari che emettano qualche suono buffo. Secondo me è anche importantissimo procurarsi un KONG, cioè una specie di cono cavo all'interno in cui nascondere leccornie di ogni tipo: biscotti, carne in scatola, paté, ecc. Il gioco sta nel leccare questo Kong finché la leccornia al suo interno non è esaurita e nel frattempo la mamma sarà andata a lavorare o fare la spesa e il cucciolo non si sarà accorto di niente! Quando il cane sarà ormai diventato abile in questo gioco, si può preparare un Kong e metterlo in freezer in modo che sarà più laborioso poi leccarne il contenuto!

• Nel caso in cui il vostro cucciolo arrivi in inverno, sarebbe bene procurarsi un cappottino per il freddo e una mantellina per la pioggia, soprattutto se si tratta di cani particolarmente sensibili alle temperature come i Chihuahua. Se il cucciolo dovesse arrivare in estate invece, un bel tappetino refrigerante dovrebbe essere preso in seria considerazione, specialmente se avete scelto una razza brachicefala (Bulldogs, Carlino, Boxer,...).

• Inoltre, è quasi una necessità portare il cane in auto e dunque è bene equipaggiarsi. In commercio esistono delle apposite cinture di sicurezza che si attaccano esattamente come le nostre (mi raccomando, da usare SOLO con la pettorina!) oppure dei confortevolissimi seggiolini per auto, in morbidi tessuti e vari colori. A questo proposito, consiglio di fare un giro sulla pagina Facebook "Accessori per animali - Le Pet Chic", in cui potrete trovare tutti gli accessori possibili ed immaginabili (comprese le cucce auto) realizzati su misura e completamente personalizzati.

• In un secondo momento, quando il cucciolo sarà un po' più grande, potreste pensare di procurarvi dei bocconcini per l'addestramento e dei prodotti per la cura del pelo (shampoo, balsamo, spazzola,...).
