Parliamo di... Crocchette! - Let's talk about... Kibbles!

Like many other unfortunate dog owners, I had to let my dog try ​​a variety of kibble before finding the right one for us (and I'm not sure we found them).

First of all, let me explain step by step what pushed me to always seek new kibbles, different kibbles, better kibbles.

From an early age, Zelda has always scratches herself a lot on the back and on the area of the eyes and muzzle. Once we knew that it was not fleas, it has been suggested food intolerance. As you know, the meat that we eat every day comes from factory farms, where animals are pumped full of antibiotics and vaccines to "fatten" earlier. Generally, a chicken we eat from one of these farms is about 35 days, practically a puppy. When we ingest chicken or turkey, of course, we also ingest antibiotics and vaccines that, fortunately, don't have any negative effect in the short term on us. But on our animals they have, especially those a bit too delicate like Zelda. In most of dogs' food, there is just dry chicken and turkey as the main form of protein. What happened to Zelda for months, before disposing of all the chicken kibbles that had eaten, was throwing up after every meal.

I think it is important to choose only quality dog food for our friends, even better if from your own Country and from animals that have not undergone intensive farming.

In detail, just got home, Zelda ate the kibbles that the breeder had used, ie specific kibbles for French Bulldog by Royal Canin. She basically fasted until I changed them. She used to eat 6 kibbles per day and just because I fed her with my hands. There is also to say that the very particular form in my opinion is not suitable for puppies of 2 months old, too big and "edgy". Not recommended!

In desperation because my baby of 1.8 kg was not eating, I ran to the pet store looking for something different to try. Fortunately, just arrived, I realized that the store was full of stands of Eukanuba and a very kind girl filled me with samples of dry food for puppies that Zelda has literally worshiped! Right size, tasty... Seemed perfect! Too bad that after a few days Zelda has begun to spew after every meal!

So, I brought again my little baby to the vet, who advised us specific kibbles for intestinal problems by Hill's, the i/d which in theory should reduce the regurgitation of Zelda after the meal. At the fourth package, I still had not noticed any improvement so I decided to document elsewhere. Speaking with many owners of Frenchies but especially English Bulldogs (certainly more experienced than me), I realized that Zelda was probably just allergic to the chicken, so I decided to "throw" ourselves on other kind of meat.

It was just like this that we discovered Trainer and we both fell in love with it. Unfortunately, the specific line for puppies is really not supplied, the croquettes are or duck or fish, while the line for adults, in addition to having different types of meat such as horse, lamb or rabbit, is also broken down into the various problems of the dog (overweight dogs, anorexic dogs, heart problems, etc.). Since Zelda did not seem to appreciate particularly the seafood, we opted just for the duck kibbles. Zelda has stopped being sick after every meal, but it has not stopped scratching, and indeed, the itching seemed to grow more intense.

The search for the perfect kibble has become really hard, we tried again and again with more and more brands without the itching would stop. Zelda scratched more and more under the chin, around the eyes and into the ears. We tried the Extra Dry Food, both rabbit and pig without getting the slightest result (really expensive kibbles with a really bad packaging! What sense does the cardboard box around the classic aluminum bag have? Just to produce other waste?) and from the new line of kibble Natursan we tried both horse and trout. But even with these the itching hasn't stopped (I am sorry, but I couldn't find the English sites).

When we realized that these were not even beginning to produce the desired effect, we went back to Trainer, this time opting for the fish line.

After that, the surprise: a beautiful purple patch without hair right in the middle of the back between the shoulder blades! Another visit to the  veterinary (We are always to the vet!) and the good news: dermatitis!

As it is a very recent thing, we don't know from what has been caused, but it is highly likely that it is a food intolerance.

Armed with good will, we got to read all the ingredients of all the kibbles trying to see if there was any ingredient in common  to eliminate that as well. To my surprise, the corn could be the only ingredient impeachable!

So, with the help of many other unfortunate dogs' owners, we found anItalian kibble, no corn, using only fish caught and not farmed, created by a team of veterinarians, who until that moment I had completely snubbed: Forza 10 (=Strength 10).

We're using it for a couple of weeks but I've already noticed small improvements... Have we found the right ones?

PS = Many people, after hearing all this long history have asked me why I do not cook at home for Zelda. I am not even able to make a cup of coffee. The only time I tried to give her a little meat, She left it in the bowl to become dry. I would say she was very clear!

Come molti altri padroni di cani sfortunati, anche io ho dovuto far provare alla mia piccola svariati tipi di crocchette prima di trovare quelle adatte a noi (e non sono neanche sicura di averle trovate!).

Anzitutto, vorrei spiegare passo passo che cosa mi ha spinta a ricercare sempre crocchette nuove, diverse, migliori. 

Sin da piccola, Zelda si è sempre grattata moltissimo nella zona della schiena, degli occhi e del muso. Una volta appurato che non si trattava di pulci, è stata avanzata l'ipotesi dell'intolleranza alimentare. Come si sa, la carne che noi consumiamo ogni giorno proviene da allevamenti intensivi, nei quali gli animali vengono imbottiti di antibiotici e vaccini per "ingrassare" prima. Generalmente, un pollo proveniente da un di questi allevamenti ha circa 35 giorni, praticamente un cucciolo. Quando noi ingeriamo il pollo o il tacchino, ovviamente ingeriamo anche antibiotici e vaccini che fortunatamente su di noi non hanno alcun effetto negativo a breve termine. Sui nostri amici animali però sì, specialmente su quelli un po' troppo delicati come Zelda. Nella maggior parte delle crocchette per animali è presente proprio carne di pollo e tacchino essiccata come principale forma proteica. Quello che è successo a Zelda per mesi, prima di smaltire tutte le crocchette di pollo che si era mangiata, è stato vomitare dopo ogni singolo pasto.

Credo che sia importante scegliere solo crocchette di qualità per i nostri amici, ancora meglio se italiane e provenienti da animali che non hanno subito un allevamento intensivo.

Nel dettaglio, appena arrivata a casa, Zelda mangiava le crocchette a cui l'allevatore l'aveva abituata, ossia le crocchine specifiche per Bouledogue Francese della Royal Canin. Ha praticamente digiunato finché non le ho cambiate. Ne mangiava 6 al giorno e giusto perché la imboccavo io. C'è anche da dire che la forma molto particolare secondo me non è adatta ai cuccioli di 2 mesi, troppo grosse e "spigolose". Bocciatissime!

In preda alla disperazione perché la mia bambina di 1,8 kg non mangiava, sono corsa al negozio di animali più fornito in cerca di qualcosa di diverso da provare. Fortunatamente, appena arrivata, mi sono accorta che il negozio era pieno di stands della Eukanuba e una ragazza gentilissima mi ha riempita di campioncini di crocchette per cuccioli che Zelda ha letteralmente adorato! Giusta dimensione, appetitose... Sembravano perfette! Peccato che dopo pochi giorni Zelda abbia cominciato a rimettere dopo ogni pasto!

Così, affranta, ho portato la mia piccola dalla vet, che ci ha consigliato le crocchette specifiche per problemi intestinali della Hill's, le i/d che in teoria avrebbero dovuto limitare il rigurgito di Zelda dopo il pasto. Alla quarta confezione ancora non avevo notato il minimo miglioramento e allora ho deciso di documentarmi altrove. Parlando con molti proprietari di Bouledogue ma soprattutto di Bulldog Inglesi sicuramente più esperti di me, ho capito che probabilmente era proprio il pollo a fare allergia a Zelda e quindi ho deciso di "lanciarmi" su carni più particolari.

E' stato proprio così che abbiamo scoperto la Trainer e ce ne siamo innamorate. Purtroppo la linea specifica per cuccioli non è molto fornita, le crocchette sono o all'anatra o al pesce, mentre la linea per adulti, oltre ad avere differenti tipi di carni come cavallo, agnello o coniglio, è anche suddivisa per le varie problematiche del cane (cani in sovrappeso, cani anoressici, problemi cardiaci, ecc). Siccome Zelda non sembrava apprezzare particolarmente il pesce, abbiamo optato subito per le crocchette all'anatra. Zelda ha smesso di stare male dopo ogni pasto, ma non ha smesso di grattarsi, e anzi, il prurito sembrava farsi sempre più intenso.

Sono cominciate così diverse settimane in cui la ricerca della crocchetta perfetta si è fatta veramente faticosa, abbiamo provato più e più carni di più e più marche senza che il prurito si arrestasse. Zelda si grattava sempre di più sotto al mento, intorno agli occhi e nelle orecchie. Tra le crocchette degne di nota, abbiamo provato le Extra Dry Food sia al coniglio che al maiale senza ottenere il minimo risultato (crocchette tra parentesi CARISSIME e con un packaging veramente pessimo! Che senso ha la scatola di cartone intorno alla classica busta in alluminio? Giusto per produrre altri rifiuti?) e la nuova linea di crocchette Natursan al cavallo e alla trota. Ma neanche con queste il prurito si è arrestato.

Quando abbiamo capito che neanche queste stavano sortendo l'effetto sperato, siamo tornate alla Trainer, questa volta però optando per la linea al pesce. 

Dopodiché, è comparsa la sorpresa: una bella chiazza viola senza pelo proprio al centro della schiena tra le scapole! Un'altra corsa dalla veterinaria (oramai siamo sempre da lei poverina!) e la bella notizia: dermatite!

Siccome è una cosa molto recente, non sappiamo ancora da cosa sia stata causata, ma visti i precedenti, è altamente probabile che si tratti di un'intolleranza alimentare.

Armati di buona volontà, ci siamo messi a leggere tutti gli ingredienti di tutte le singole crocchette provate per vedere se ce ne fosse qualcuno in comune e provare ad eliminare anche quello. Con mia grande sorpresa, il mais poteva essere l'unico ingrediente incriminabile! 

Così, con l'ausilio di molti altri sfortunatissimi padroni, abbiamo trovato delle crocchette italiane, senza mais, che utilizzano solo pesce pescato e non da allevamento, create da un'equipe di veterinari, che io fino a quel momento avevo completamente snobbato: Forza 10.

Le stiamo usando da un paio di settimane però a me sembra di notare già dei piccoli miglioramenti... Che siano quelle giuste?

P.S.= In molti, dopo aver sentito tutta questa lunga storia mi hanno chiesto perché io non cucini casalingo per Zelda. Non sono capace neanche di fare un caffè. L'unica volta che ho provato a farle un po' di carne, me l'ha lasciata nella ciotola a diventare secca. Direi che è stata molto chiara!
