L'ora del bagnetto - Bath time

BATHING

Every time I think about washing the dog, I think of the classic movie scenes in which it is the human to take a nice shower and the bathroom is devastated.

At least in this, I am very lucky: Zelda LOVES water and she lets me wash her willingly. If you are not as lucky as me, here are some simple tips that I hope will make this process a little 'less problematic' for you.

The skin of the dog is not like ours, so it would be best not to overdo it with too frequent washing! Two or three bathrooms per year should be sufficient!

First, it is essential to have at your fingertips everything you will need to make your four-legged friend clean and fragrant:

• Brushes or combs
• Shampoo or natural Marseille soap (absolutely DON'T use your shampoo!)
• Various products specific to dogs you intend to use before or after washing
• Sponge
• Towels
• Hairdryer
• Tasty morsels

Before proceeding, I suggest you to carefully brush your animal, so that during rinsing, he will not lose too many hairs (remember that it is normal for the dog to lose a little hair, even if not in season).

You have to decide where you want to wash your dog, whether inside the bath, in a tub that you put inside the tank or outside,...

• Start by placing your friend in the tub, maybe trying not to shake him  too much. With showerhead, pour WARM water around the body starting from the bottom and leaving the head dry. Only when the hair is impregnated with water, proceed with washing.

• Soap up thoroughly the coat of the dog, the spaces between the toes, tail and belly. Take advantage of this time to thoroughly check the condition of the hair and skin (dull coat, skin without hair, abundant hair loss,...) and if you find there is something wrong, talk to the vet!

• Rinse thoroughly the coat of your dog, taking care to remove all traces of shampoo from the hair. BE CAREFUL not to get water in his eyes or ears!

• Now switch to cleaning his head. Dogs do not particularly like water directly on the face, then with a little bit of shampoo, gently cleanse the head and neck using the sponge, and rinse thoroughly (always paying attention to his eyes and ears).

• Keep in mind that nothing in the world is friendlier than a wet dog, so wipe him with a towel and apply any products for the luster of the hair before drying with an hair dryer. If the weather permits, you can prefer to take a walk in the sun rather than "traumatize" your dog with an hair dryer. But if you have no other choice, get an appetizing morsels to use as a reward when he is quiet. Pay particular attention to the area of the tail and neck, but ALWAYS keep the hair dryer at a minimum distance of 20 cm to not burn the dog.

If you realize that during the whole process your dog is very scared, consider taking him to a professional groomer. You will avoid to stress yourself and to traumatize him. The result will be perfect.

QUICK WASH

If your dog smells or he is dirty, but it doesn't seem to be the case to give him a real bath, you can use this method to clean up its mantle surface in a natural way and remove the smell.

You will need:

• A sponge
• A tub
• White wine vinegar
• A towel

Prepare a solution of warm water and white vinegar (with Zelda I use one part vinegar to five parts water), soak the sponge with this solution. Now, using the well wrung sponge, cleanse the mantle of the animal until the dirt and the smell will be gone. Dry rub gently.

The hair is shiny and I assure you that the smell fades completely.

IL BAGNETTO

Ogni volta che penso a dover lavare il cane, mi vengono in mente le classiche scene dei film in cui è il padrone a farsi una bella doccia e il bagno è devastato.

Almeno in questo, io sono stata molto fortunata: Zelda ADORA l'acqua e si fa insaponare volentieri. Se voi non siete fortunati come me, ecco alcuni semplici consigli che spero possano rendere questa operazione un po' meno "problematica".

La cute del cane non è come la nostra, quindi sarebbe meglio non esagerare con lavaggi troppo frequenti. Due o tre bagni all'anno dovrebbero essere sufficienti!

Anzitutto, è indispensabile avere a portata di mano tutto ciò che sarà necessario per rendere il vostro amico a quattro zampe pulito e profumato:

• Spazzole o pettini
• Shampoo specifico o Sapone di Marsiglia naturale (assolutamente da NON usare il vostro shampoo per capelli!)
• Prodotti vari specifici per cani che intendete usare prima o dopo il lavaggio
• Spugna
• Asciugamani
• Phon
• Bocconcini appetitosi

Prima di procedere, vi consiglio di spazzolare accuratamente l'animale, in modo che durante il risciacquo, non perda troppi peli (ricordo che è normale che il cane perda un po' di pelo, anche se non è stagione).

Decidete dove lavare il vostro cane, se dentro la vasca, in una tinozza che posizionerete dentro la vasca o all'esterno,...

• Cominciate posizionando il vostro pelosetto nella vasca o nella tinozza, magari cercando di non farlo agitare troppo. Con il soffione della doccia, bagnate con acqua TIEPIDA tutto il corpo dell'animale partendo dal sedere e lasciando asciutta la testa.Solo quando il pelo sarà bello impregnato di acqua, procedete con il lavaggio.

• Insaponate accuratamente il manto del cane, gli spazi interdigitali, la coda e la pancia. Approfittate di questo momento per controllare accuratamente le condizioni del pelo e della cute (pelo opaco, cute senza pelo, abbondante perdita di pelo,...) e se trovate che ci sia qualcosa di strano, parlatene col veterinario!

• Risciacquate abbondantemente il manto del cane, facendo molta attenzione a rimuovere ogni residuo di shampoo dal pelo. ATTENZIONE a non far entrare acqua negli occhi o nelle orecchie!

• Passate ora alla pulizia della testa. I cani non amano particolarmente il getto direttamente sul muso, quindi con un po' di shampoo, passate dolcemente la spugna sulla testa e sul collo, e sciacquate accuratamente (facendo sempre attenzione ad occhi e orecchie!).

• Tenete presente che nulla al mondo è amichevole come un cane bagnato, quindi asciugate "il grosso" con un asciugamano e applicate eventuali prodotti per la lucentezza del pelo prima dell'asciugatura col phon. Se la stagione lo consente, potreste decidere di fare una bella passeggiata al sole piuttosto che "traumatizzare" Fido col phon, però se non avete altra scelta, procuratevi dei bocconcini appetitosi da usare come premio quando è tranquillo. Prestate particolare attenzione alla zona della coda e del collo, ma tenete SEMPRE il phon ad una distanza di almeno 20 cm per non scottare il cane.

Se vi rendete conto che durante l'intera operazione il vostro cane è molto spaventato, considerate l'ipotesi di portarlo da un toelettatore professionista. Eviterete di stressarvi voi e di traumatizzare lui e il risultato sarà perfetto.

LAVAGGIO VELOCE

Se Fido puzza o si è sporcato ma non vi sembra il caso di fargli un vero e proprio bagno, potete usare questo metodo per pulire superficialmente il suo manto in maniera naturale e allontanare il cattivo odore.

Procuratevi:

• Una spugna
• Una tinozza (non particolarmente grande)
• Aceto di vino bianco
• Un asciugamano 

Preparate una soluzione di acqua tiepida e aceto di vino bianco (con Zelda uso una parte di aceto e cinque di acqua), impregnate la spugna con questa soluzione. Adesso passate la spugna ben strizzata sul manto dell'animale finché lo sporco e l'odore non saranno svaniti. Asciugate frizionando delicatamente.

Il pelo resta lucido e vi assicuro che l'odore svanisce completamente.
